| Katz82 | Dec 25, 2007 2:24pm | | ok, macs are nothing new to me, but recently, my new macbook pro crashed on me, without warning, just surfing the web. Anybody know why?? or have the same prob? It shouldn't just shutdown like that.. it's new! I keep it plugged in for when I'm using it now. Thanks for the feedback :) |

| oldSNAKE | Dec 25, 2007 4:57pm | macs are safe(r) but (sh)it does happen.. crashed as in shut down by itself or kernel panic (dark screen asking you to turn it off)??
keeping the power cord plugged in doesn't change much secondo me..
i've had a couple of kernel panics on my (new) macbook when force-downloading to much stuff in azureus, but that's basically overheating of the body..
if that's the case with you, try some vent control software (i use smcFanControl)
again, crashes as happen to me in xp regularly while using heavy rendering software (almost) never surface in similar situations under os x..
so it happened just once on your mbpro or?? |

| Katz82 | Dec 26, 2007 8:48am | | shut down by itself, without warning, and was not plugged in. Maybe overheating, like you said, bc it does heat up like hells kitch. It has happened more than a few times now, not even using heavy software, just websurfing or photoshop. I'll try the smcFanContr see how that works.. thanks a bunch! |

| Katz82 | Jan 1, 7:29am | | ..so, my macbook doesn't shut off because it's overheated, now I am mad and confused. should I begin to hate my apple? maybe the battery needs replacing. oh, and the shell on the battery is popping off a little on the edges, so maybe it DID at times get heat damgage. |

| altfthirteen | Jan 1, 8:15am | | you could try a laptop cooler stand which spreads the heat that comes out, you may also want to consider where you place your laptop ie* on your bed is a very bad idea. |

| pick-le | Jan 23, 6:10am | | I definitely recommend getting a laptop cooler (unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way). The one by Belkin is fantastic. |

As well as lifting the Mac (an iBook, in my case) into the air and keeping it it cool, it puts the screen at eye-level on the desk. Keyboard slots underneath, or usb ports... all-in-all a thoroughly recommended bit of kit for anyone who uses their lappy at a desk. |

| Katz82 | Jan 30, 3:42pm | Ok, update on my sad laptop. There is an "X" mark where the battery icon is, and says "No Batteries Available" :( I have had my laptop for no longer than a year, and I am wondering if the battery actually burnt itself out. The silver lining on the actual battery has separated a little bit, so I believe I will probably have to replace it. Has anyone else had this problem?
Thank you for the advice and help! I wish I had known about this earlier. |

| Staff | george | Jan 30, 5:09pm | Defective MBP batteries are quite common unfortunately. If none of the little LED on the battery lights up when you push the button after you charge it for sometime then it's time to replace it. The Apple Store Genius bar is nice enough to give me a new battery on the spot.
Good luck,
